The Heart of Our Campaign

Welcome to the heart of our campaign, where our focus is on building a brighter, more equitable future for every resident of our great community. At the core of our mission are five key pillars that define our commitment to positive change: Safe Communities, Public Education, Affordable Housing, Workforce Development, and Environmental Justice. In our pursuit of a better tomorrow, we aim to address the root causes of crime, bridge educational gaps, ensure housing is within reach for all, prepare our workforce for the jobs of the future, and champion environmental justice. Together, these priorities form the blueprint for a thriving and inclusive community where safety, education, housing, employment, and the environment are not just aspirations but tangible realities for every individual. Join us on this journey, and together, let’s shape a community that works for everyone, leaving no one behind.

a. Address Underlying Economic Causes of Crime

To truly ensure the safety of our community, we must address the root causes of crime, particularly those stemming from economic disparities. By investing in education, job training, and economic opportunities, we can uplift individuals and families, breaking the cycle of poverty that often leads to criminal activities. Through targeted programs and community initiatives, we can create an environment where economic well-being is shared by all, contributing to the overall safety of our community.

b. 2nd Chance Programs

Recognizing that everyone deserves an opportunity for redemption, we advocate for robust 2nd chance programs. By providing individuals who have committed non-violent offenses with access to rehabilitation, education, and job training, we can reintegrate them into society as productive members. This approach not only reduces recidivism but also fosters a sense of community and compassion, contributing to the creation of a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.

a. Closing the Achievement Gap

Closing the achievement gap is a top priority in our mission to transform public education. By implementing targeted interventions, such as increased funding for underserved schools, mentorship programs, and access to advanced coursework, we aim to create a level playing field for all students. By addressing disparities in educational outcomes, we can ensure that every child, regardless of background, has an equal opportunity to succeed.

b. Employable Skills Certification

Recognizing the evolving job market, we advocate for a shift in our education system towards providing practical, employable skills. By enhancing vocational training programs and promoting partnerships with local industries, we can equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in the workforce. Employable skills certification programs will empower individuals to pursue fulfilling careers and contribute to our state's economic growth.

a. Homeownership Is The Key

The dream of homeownership should be attainable for all income levels. By implementing policies that support affordable mortgage options, down payment assistance, and community land trusts, we can make homeownership a reality for more families. Stable housing is a foundation for thriving communities, and our commitment to increasing homeownership opportunities aims to create a more equitable and prosperous society.

b. Reasonable Rents

Affordable housing extends beyond homeownership, and we recognize the importance of reasonable rents for renters. Implementing rent control measures, providing incentives for landlords to maintain affordable rents, and investing in the development of mixed-income housing are crucial steps in ensuring that individuals and families have access to safe, affordable rental options.

a. Train & Credential People For Living Wage Jobs

To prepare our workforce for the jobs of tomorrow, we must prioritize training and credentialing programs that align with the demands of the modern economy. By investing in education and vocational training that leads to industry-recognized credentials, we empower individuals to secure living wage jobs and contribute to the economic prosperity of our state.

b. Partnerships To Create Internships/Apprenticeships

Building strong partnerships between educational institutions and businesses is essential for creating pathways to success. Internships and apprenticeships provide valuable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between education and employment. Through collaboration with industries, we can ensure that our workforce is equipped with the practical skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields.

a. SCSPA Environment & Economic Justice Program

The South Carolina Ports Authority's Environment & Economic Justice Program is dedicated to ensuring that the benefits of economic development are equitably distributed among communities. By prioritizing environmental justice, we strive to mitigate the disproportionate burdens placed on marginalized communities. This program emphasizes transparency, community engagement, and sustainable practices to create a balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility.

b. DHEC Crackdown of Communities Polluting Poor Communities

The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is committed to cracking down on industries that disproportionately pollute poor communities. By enforcing stricter regulations, monitoring emissions, and holding polluting entities accountable, we aim to protect vulnerable communities from environmental hazards. This initiative aligns with our commitment to environmental justice, ensuring that no community bears an unfair burden of pollution and its associated health risks.
